Who We Are
Young Ballerz Basketball is one of the United Kingdom’s fastest-growing grassroots youth sports organisations, dedicated to introducing children to the game of basketball in a fun, supportive, and structured environment. Founded in September 2021 by Carl and Amy Robertson, Young Ballerz began with a clear purpose: to create engaging basketball opportunities for children from as young as three years old and to foster physical, social, and personal development through sport.
Our Mission
Our mission is to make basketball accessible, enjoyable, and beneficial for children of all skill levels across the UK. We believe that the early experiences children have with sport shape not only their physical abilities but also their confidence, teamwork skills, communication, and self-discipline. Through well-structured classes, positive coaching, and inclusive programming, we aim to empower young players to thrive both on and off the court.
Our Story
What began as a single class in Southend has quickly grown into a vibrant programme with multiple weekly sessions across Essex and the South East. Carl and Amy recognised a gap in quality basketball provision for young children in the UK — not just competitive teams, but welcoming spaces where children could learn, play, and enjoy basketball without pressure. Drawing on their personal experiences and extensive childcare insight, they set out to build something that prioritises fun and learning equally.
From toddlers taking their first steps in sport to older children developing coordination and tactical understanding, Young Ballerz Basketball offers a structured pathway that supports sustained engagement and skill progression. At every stage, we emphasise positive reinforcement, encouragement, and personal growth.
What We Believe
At Young Ballerz, we believe that sport should be inclusive, inspiring, and confidence-building. Basketball is a dynamic sport that encourages:
-
Fun and enjoyment — we make learning the game exciting and engaging.
-
Friendship and teamwork — children meet peers, build relationships, and learn how to work together.
-
Skill development — from basic hand-eye coordination to understanding game concepts.
-
Focus and discipline — regular sessions help children improve concentration and self-control.
We’re committed to creating a pressure-free environment where every child feels valued, supported, and motivated to try their best. This approach helps build not only athletes but resilient, confident individuals.
Our Programmes
Young Ballerz Basketball offers weekly classes tailored to different age groups and developmental stages. Our programmes serve children aged 3 to 14 years, with carefully designed sessions that introduce the fundamentals of basketball while reinforcing positive behaviours such as teamwork, focus, and perseverance.
We organise age-appropriate groups — including beginner cohorts for very young children and more advanced sessions for older participants — ensuring each Ballerz receives coaching suited to their ability and confidence level.
Our classes run at multiple venues throughout the South East, including Harrow Lodge Leisure Centre, Basildon Sporting Village, and Storm Fitness and Leisure, offering convenient access for families across the region.
High-Quality Coaching Standards
Central to our success is our team of dedicated coaches. Each coach is carefully selected based on their passion for basketball and their ability to connect with children. All coaches undergo enhanced DBS checks and hold relevant qualifications in both coaching and child safeguarding. Lead coaches possess at least a Level 2 coaching accreditation accredited by Basketball England, alongside essential first aid credentials.
Our coaching philosophy emphasises positive reinforcement, safety, and engagement. Sessions are designed to be structured yet flexible, allowing coaches to adapt activities to the group’s energy and confidence levels. This balance ensures children are both challenged and supported.
Community and Growth
Basketball remains an under-represented sport among young children in the UK, with limited opportunities compared to other mainstream sports. Young Ballerz Basketball is committed to bridging this gap by building a movement that makes basketball more widely available and community-centred.
We collaborate with local venues, schools, and leisure centres to bring high-quality coaching directly to communities. Our goal is not only to teach basketball skills, but also to help children gain lifelong benefits from physical activity, social connection, and positive competition.
Franchise and Future Vision
As demand has grown, so has our ambition. Young Ballerz Basketball now offers franchising opportunities for passionate individuals who want to inspire the next generation in their own communities. We provide franchisees with a proven model, comprehensive training, administrative support, marketing tools, and ongoing mentorship — enabling them to successfully launch and grow their Young Ballerz classes.
This strategic expansion reflects our long-term goal: to establish a national network of high-quality youth basketball programmes that reach families across the UK, creating accessible pathways for children to learn, play, and love the game.
